Basic Policy on Ethics

Pickleball Japan (PJ) places “ensuring ethics in sport” at the core of its organizational management and competitive activities, and takes action on each item in line with the spirit of the Japan Sport Association’s “Guidelines on Sports Ethics” and the Basic Act on Sport.

Status of the Code of Ethics

PJ’s Code of Ethics is built around the following key pillars.

  • Prohibition of discrimination and respect for human rights (Article 3)
We prohibit all forms of discrimination based on race, sex, religion, disability, and similar grounds, and respect the fundamental human rights of all people.
  • A framework for preventing harassment (Articles 4 and 14)
We prohibit all forms of harassment, including power harassment and sexual harassment, and have set up a reporting contact point along with a system to protect whistleblowers.
  • Ensuring fairness and integrity (Article 5)
We prohibit conduct that undermines the fairness of sport, such as match-fixing, biased officiating, and violence, and promote integrity through ethics education.
  • Protecting minors and prohibiting violence (Articles 6 and 10)
We give due consideration to the healthy development of young people, and explicitly prohibit corporal punishment and violence.
  • Cutting ties with anti-social forces (Article 7)
We exclude all relationships with anti-social forces, and require the same of everyone we work with.
  • Transparent, accountable management (Articles 11–13)
We ensure transparent governance in how the organization is run, and have formalized policies on preventing conflicts of interest and managing personal information.

Anti-Doping Framework

Based on our Anti-Doping Policy, we have built a doping-prevention framework that complies with the international standards of JADA and WADA.

  • Prohibition of doping (Article 4)
We prohibit violations such as use, possession, and provision of prohibited substances, with a clear policy of strict enforcement.
  • Education and awareness activities (Article 5)
We run regular awareness activities, including e-learning, to raise awareness among players and coaches.
  • Handling Therapeutic Use Exemptions, or TUEs (Article 6)
Where treatment requires a prohibited substance or method for medical reasons, we manage this appropriately in line with JADA standards.
  • Testing, procedures, and sanctions framework (Articles 7–12)
We have established sample analysis through appropriate testing bodies, disciplinary measures for violations, and a public disclosure framework where necessary.

Future Initiatives

  • Establishing an ethics committee and formalizing its operating rules
  • Making ethics and anti-doping training a regular occurrence
  • Expanding ethics awareness activities to regional organizations
  • Developing a reporting response manual
